Vaqueros y Rancheros: America's Original Cowboys and Ranchers

A special display honoring Vaqueros y Rancheros,  America’s first cowboys, ranchers and rodeo performers will open Friday, March 5 at Casa Ramirez FOLKART Gallery at 241 West 19th in the Houston Heights.  The exhibit will continue through Sunday, March 21, 2010.  An opening reception will be held Saturday, March 6 from 2 to 4 p.m.

Vaquero photographs, artifacts, Mexican saddles and other items used by vaqueros will be on display.  Oil paintings of Texas cattle scenes by Lilibeth André will also be featured.

The video LA CHARREADA, El Rodeo Mexicano, a UCSC/KTEH Production will be shown during the day.

The exhibit highlights the important contribution the Mexican vaquero and ranchero made to our current cattle and ranching industry. Many of today’s rodeo skills originated with the vaquero. The vaquero taught the North American cowboy to ride, rope, tend cattle and survive the rough mesquite and nopal country -- while the rancheros and rancheras were the original ranchers that pioneered the establishment and development of America’s cattle industry.

Casa Ramirez is located at 241 West 19th Street in the Houston Heights.  Gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

For more information contact Macario Ramirez at 713-880-2420.
