Channel 11 for Via Colori 2010

May 21, 2010. Houston, Texas. When the Institute for Hearing and Speech invited me to become one of the Via Colori master artists for the 2010 festival I was honored and excited to be one of the eight selected artists.

As a master artist I had the privilege of creating an 8 foot by 8 foot street painting for Channel 11, Great Day Houston Show with Debra Duncan. The show was featuring "Viva Italia". Since the theme was the Italian Festival, I chose this great Renaissance piece by Raphael which was recently confirmed to be the last piece he created before his death. Here is my step by step progression of the work I created for Great Day Houston. I enjoyed using the texture of the road to enhance the effect.

Via Colori 2009

November 21 & 22, 2009. Houston, Texas. Mark your calendar and come see my new temporary art created especially for this year's Via Colori, downtown at Sam Houston Park on Bagby and Allen Parkway. Come back to read my event log.

Update: Well we were rained out on Saturday. I left home. The rain had stopped but once I got downtown the little drizzle began. We expected sunshine by noon but the sun did not come out to play. Sunday, as you can see from the photos, was an entirely different story. With only a few clouds here and there, the day was beautiful. Enjoy my interpretation of Michael Angelo's David, my favorite sculpture of all time. I had help this year. I trained a non artiste to paint sky and he did very well. I once again had the pleasure of painting the square for KUHF 88.7 FM Houston Public Radio. Thank you guys for sponsoring this square!

Luisa, this one's for you. I  hope you like "David, skin and bone".

Via Colori 2008

November 22, 2008. Houston, Texas. Back for more fun with my second sidewalk art project. Enjoyed it once again and met some nice people. I got to see some friends as well. The day was gorgeous although it started a bit chilly. But with little clouds and a mostly sunny day, I pretty much completed my study of the Birth of Venus by Boticelli. I was undecided about how much to do but last night I chose to do the close up of the Venus. I hope you enjoy it.

UPDATE: I once again had the privilege to paint KUHF 88.7 FM's sponsored square. I covered it this evening in the event there are any sprinkles tonight. Come on down and see it tomorrow. I'm on Allen Parkway just a few hundred feet from the main stage at Bagby, just off Sam Houston Park. We are actually painting on the street.

Here's the outline. I once again chose to do a 6 ft. by 6 ft. square. This is hard, physical work folks. Try this at home just to get in shape. Otherwise, be sure to train for a climbing and swimming event.

Here I am starting on the block-in.

My intent is to block as much as possible to cover the pavement and set up a nice base from which to work with.

I've outlined the face and just completed blocking the hair.

Now you see the sky blocked in.

Skin color and preparing some shadows to outline the face. I keep the neck clear to access the surrounding work. Sunshine speckles the pavement through the branches of the live oak above.

Ginger came by and helped smooth out the sky. She was a trooper and helped with logistics, very useful support. More skin on neck and shoulders.

Started highlights on the hair and some drawing corrections. There's Ginger sitting on the corner. Can you see her latest silver bracelet? She's a creative jeweler.

OK, here we have more work creating dimension.

More wispy hair strands.

More dimension and some drawing corrections.

I'm calling it a day for today. I'll be back tomorrow and see what else is needed.

Here's another angle to give you scale. I'll see what else I pickup tomorrow with the lens.

Here's the top view.

And the crowds arrived!

Via Colori 2007

November 17, 2007. Houston, Texas. This is my first sidewalk art project and I had a blast at the Houston Via Colori. I enjoyed it and got the image laid out. The day started with overcast skies. Nonetheless, I jumped right in to get ahead as fast as possible. Towards the middle of the day we got some sprinkles and then some light showers, mostly drizzle but we kept on going. We were all prepared for the weather so when the showers got a little denser we covered the work to protect it. Just sitting around under the live oaks, the break gave us an opportunity to chat among artist and art lovers. We also checked out the festival booths and enjoyed the live music. After a few mint capuchinos and a sausage-on-a-stick I returned to my 6 foot X 6 foot square and jumped back in to finish on the same day and meet my personal goal to finish on Saturday. Tomorrow I'll do finishing touches and visit the other artists. If the tarp holds securely and it doesn't rain tonight, I will avoid damage to the painting. If not, I will be doing damage repair. So far, it is dry tonight.

UPDATE: It has been raining continuously in various volumes after signing off last night so this is the only way you'll see "Marsh Tunes". It's now 9am and the birds are chirping in their nests but I'm thinking its all now a river of color down Lamar at Sam Houston Park.

I'm beginning to block the outline on the KUHF Houston Public Radio square. They requested something "classical". See the upside down white "T" in the middle? It's thermal plastic to delineate parking space. I chose to paint upside down to camouflage it in the water.

More sky, marsh and bass colors. Started on the great blue heron. The "T" shows up more than it does in reality because it has reflective paint and it sparkles with the flash.

More color on the bass and started on the spoon bill and it's reflection. The street color lends itself to the actual colors of the great blue heron but the high texture of the road requires coverage.

Detailing on the bass, grass, and great blue heron. Added the musical notes.

Is this a duplicate photo? I think I didn't trust my pulse after the three mint capuchinos.

More shading in this one. Can you also see some of the rain damage by the great blue heron?

Getting close to the end and waiting for the water to dry while adding more details.

More detailing on the great blue heron and added the strings on the bass.

At last, I get into the picture thanks to a kind gentleman taking pictures of the artwork.

Getting close. The water is almost dry and more accents and shadows are added.

This is it! This is the final work as of this evening.

I'm calling it a day. The ground is starting to dry and it's getting too dark to work on details.
